Abstract:

Conventional wisdom holds that many-body quantum dynamics are both complex and difficult to study even using the most advanced super computers, as the Hilbert space of the system grows exponentially with the number of quantum particles. Fortunately, thanks to the recent advancement in assembling and controlling individual quantum objects, it has become feasible to directly probe quantum phenomena via a controllable quantum system, i.e. the idea of “quantum simulation". In this talk, I will introduce our recent efforts of exploiting strongly interacting solid-state spin defects in diamond to investigate exotic non-equilibrium quantum dynamics. In particular, I will discuss the observation of disorder-induced emergent unconventional spin diffusion at nanometer length scales  [1], and quasi-Floquet prethermalization in the presence of long-range dipolar interactions [2]. If time permits, I will end by describing our recent efforts in creating a 2D delta-doped layer of spin defects in diamond to study dimensionality-dependence of quantum dynamics [3].
