Throughout the world, humanity is troubled and impacted by environmental problems: natural disasters, global climate change, diminishing resources, and an increasing need for energy, water, minerals, clean air and community resilience. The Porter School of the Environment and Earth Sciences consists of three departments: Geography and Human Environment, Geophysics, and Environmental Studies. Integrating the humanities and exact sciences under the umbrella of one Environmental School has the unique potential to advance innovative disciplinary and interdisciplinary research to overcome these environmental problems and challenges. The research on environment touches upon a wide range of academic fields. Being so diverse in nature, it is hardly possible to include all of it on one page. Here are just a few examples of current issues that we investigate: algae as biofuel or plastics, oil spill detection, earthquakes, air and water pollution, extreme weather, climate change, developing green energy, oceanography, ecology, planetary science, and environmental policy.
