Abstract:

Gaia is a space observatory whose launch by ESA took place last December. Its proclaimed mission is to study the origin and subsequent evolution of our Galaxy, the Milky Way. To do this it will survey about a billion stars, allowing the construction of the most accurate three-dimensional map to date of the Galaxy. The talk will describe the Gaia space mission, its scientific context, and its expected impact.
